PROJECT DESCRIPTION

About Engelsiz ODTU:Engelsiz ODTÜ' (www.eot.metu.edu.tr) is a student society in the Middle East Technical University in Ankara,Turkey. Our student group first by considered the needs of disabled students (of all disabilities) in 2003. We began by identifying which students had special needs and found some alternatives for them to study more effectively and reach higher academic success.

Another important factor we then looked at was social life. Often disabled people find it harder to meet friends and participate in groups. A person who develops confidence can express their ideas more easily and interact effectively with others. We aim for our members to mature in many ways and thus become role models that are inspiring disabled students throughout Turkey. Our membership consists of large number (over 150) who receive our mailings; our active members include people with different disabilities and others who have no disabilities but need to learn how to interact with us.

Aims of the Project:

  • Developing strategies and abilities to cope with problems in university life.
  • Learning to justify and to develop support structures at university.
  • Discussing and finding ways for disabled students to successfully integrate at university life.
  • Sharing different experiences.
  • Developing intercultural learning.

Methology of the Training Course:

  • The main theme will focus on university life and how disabled students can successfully integrate; when the institution provides suitable support and a range of alternatives.

  • There will be mainly workshops where participants will discuss topics in small groups, which best allow disabled people to be included. That will conclude by general reporting to the course group at the end of the workshop. Each workshop will produce a report and at the end of the training course a brochure will be given to all members and put on our website, collecting all the workshop reports.
  • Visits, sports and other activities will allow participants to share experiences.

Profile of the Participants:

  • This training course is opened to university students with any disabilities. Participants with disabilities can apply for a personal assistant to come with them; this must be indicated in the application form.
  • Graduates, and non-disabled people who have experiences with this topic are also welcomed but the priority will be given to current students with disabilities.
